First There Was A Pony (2023)

The catalyst for this work was an encounter with a pony one day on a morning bike ride. The pony came over to greet me and I loved the colours of her coat and the pink and blue pattern on her blanket, and I wanted to soak up this experience – horse, blanket, reddish earth, blue sky – and channel it into a painting.

‘Horses, like the rest of us, can transform and be transformed. A horse could be a streak of sunrise, a body of sand, a moment of ecstasy. A horse could be all of this at the same time. Or a horse might be nothing at all but the imagination of the wind.’

Bike Rides In Spring (2023)

Bike Rides In Spring by Joy C Martindale (2023), acrylic and gouache and linen on paper, 70x50cm

I really enjoy having my own studio space, and being alone there and making paintings. Before starting work of a morning, I need to focus my energy and clear my mind, and to do this I often go for a bike ride along a bridleway that heads out of town towards a nature reserve. When I began this painting at the start of spring I felt elated by the changes that were happening all around. The air and light felt different, everything was beginning to grow again, flowers were emerging from the dunes, birds at the scrape were building nests, and the breeze that came in through the viewing slots in the bird hide was fresh and sweet. When I look at Bike Rides In Spring, I can feel the presence of these potent experiences.
